The Mazda brand’s SKYACTIV®-X engine, which will make its debut in select 2019 Mazda models, will break new ground for the automotive industry. Gasoline engines utilize spark plugs, which ignite a mixture of air and fuel to power the engine and make your car run. Diesel engines use a different technology called compression ignition, whereby air and fuel are made to combust without a spark. This type of operation leads to better efficiency and higher torque, but also creates greater emissions.
The SKYACTIV®-X engine uses proprietary Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) technology developed by Mazda engineers. The engine makes use of three distinct driving modes to maximize performance and minimize trade-offs. To start the engine, a spark plug ignites the fuel mixture, as is the norm in gasoline engines. But once the car is up and running, the engine kicks into a leaner, meaner mode for added efficiency. Then there’s the third mode, which achieves peak efficiency by using the spark plug to manage the compression ignition. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the SKYACTIV®-X engine is how seamlessly it operates. In test drives, reviewers report that this mode switching went unnoticed on the road.
