The Mazda CX-5 has always been a popular SUV, but it underwent a redesign for the 2017 model year. Did the engineers at Mazda manage to improve on the beloved vehicle, or did they lose what made it great? We’ll let Motor Trend answer: “Since its 2012 debut, the Mazda CX-5 has been praised widely and consistently for its inspiring steering and confident handling, peppy and efficient four-cylinder engine, engaging exterior, and handsome interior designs… For 2017, this excellence remains, yet myriad changes further improve the redesigned [Mazda] CX-5.
Those changes include engineering tweaks that boosted performance, efficiency, and appearance. Interior noise was greatly reduced through a myriad of improvements throughout the vehicle, including revisions to the floor pan, recontoured A-pillars, acoustic front side glass, additional seals throughout the doors and windows, and more. Throttle response and ride comfort also got a boost. This better-than-ever Mazda SUV is propelled by a revised 187-horsepower, 185-lb.-ft. of torque 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine routed through a recalibrated six-speed automatic transmission.
One thing the Mazda brand has long prided themselves on is their dedication to vehicle safety, and the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is no exception. The available i-ACTIV AWD® monitors outside temperature, throttle input, braking patterns, and more to predict when all-wheel drive might be required. It reacts accordingly and preemptively to optimize torque distribution. Many times, you won’t even notice the change, allowing you to focus on the road ahead.
