This month, Car and Driver magazine released their 10Best Trucks and SUVs list for 2018, singling out both the 2018 Mazda CX-5 and 2018 Mazda CX-9 as segment leaders. Car and Driver pulls no punches in singling out the best from the rest. “With thousands of miles driven, second- and third-row seats evaluated for space and comfort, cargo holds and interior storage pockets measured, and new features assessed, these vehicles are the 10 that comprehensively stood out from among their peers as the best currently on offer in their respective categories,” said the magazine.

The 2018 Mazda CX-5 was Car and Driver’s pick for the best compact crossover SUV. The editors were blown away by the vehicle design and engineering on display, saying “Its chassis provides a master class in body control—firm enough to make for engaging handling yet supple enough to shrug off pavement imperfections.” That chassis is constructed using SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY with a framework that incorporates ultra-high tensile-strength steel in critical areas to help make it both lighter and stronger. Performance is further enhanced by the Mazda brand’s latest SKYACTIV®-G engine, which makes use of Cylinder Deactivation technology to boost fuel efficiency.

The 2018 Mazda CX-9 took home the title of best three-row crossover SUV for the second time, with Car and Driver saying that it “…sets the benchmark for how a three-row SUV should satisfy its driver.” That satisfaction is thanks in large part to the well-engineered engine. Automotive engineers tend to put the bulk of their energy and expertise into designing engines that generate most of their power in the upper RPM range. But drivers spend the bulk of their time driving in the lower RPM ranges. That’s why the engineers at Mazda made sure to craft an engine that delivers plenty of torque at lower RPMs.
